This is a must. When you consider different languages, cultural conventions, and regional requirements during design, you can avoid common UI issues and prepare your product for international markets from the get-go.

There’s a name for this: design-stage localization. In this article, we’re going to discuss why this approach makes localization a more predictable part of product development, how to prepare interfaces for different languages, and how to build a workflow that connects design tools with translation management.

What is design-stage localization?

Design-stage localization simply means to have in mind the requirements of different target languages and markets while you design your digital product.

Back in the day (or even today), many teams would complete their designs in one language before and only then send the interface text for translation. This might work for simple projects, but for others, you might experience problems when the translated content doesn’t fit the original layout or when the regional requirements weren’t considered early enough.

With design-stage localization, designers account for language variations, text expansion, typography, cultural differences, and regional conventions before the product reaches development or release.

Localization vs. internationalization in the design process

Now you might be saying that this sounds a lot like internationalization. True, but there are a few differences.

Internationalization, or i18n, prepares a product to support multiple languages and regional conventions by using flexible layouts, supporting Unicode, avoiding hardcoded text, and more. Localization, or l10n, adapts a product to a specific language or market by translating the interface content and adapting dates, numbers, terminology, and other regional elements.

Why you should start localization right from the design

First off, you’d prevent UI layout problems. Translated text doesn’t always have the same length as the source text, so a short label in one language may become quite long in another language, which could cause the buttons, menus, and headings to overflow. If you design flexible components and allow enough space for text, you can reduce the need for last-minute layout changes.

It’s easier to improve the UX across languages. And we know that a well-localized interface should feel natural to its audience. That means more than replacing words in the original design. Considering all the elements that make up the UX early helps designers create experiences that accommodate all types of different audiences.

You’d also be reducing late-stage rework. If you start localizing after the designs and development are complete, you may discover that many elements need to be redesigned or adjusted. But if you address these requirements earlier, you could resolve problems before they affect the release schedule.

Last but not least, if you want to prepare for international growth, you need to build localization into the design process for a more repeatable approach to supporting more markets. So instead of reinventing the workflow every time you introduce a new language, you can reuse flexible components and existing translation processes.

Best practices for design-stage localization

👉 Design flexible layouts that accommodate text expansion

Without a doubt, one of the challenges we see the most in localization is text expansion. Translations can be longer or shorter than their source strings, and the difference varies by language and context.

To prepare for this, you should:

Avoid fixed-width text containers when flexible sizing is appropriate.

Use responsive layouts and components that adapt to their content.

Allow enough space for longer headings, buttons, and navigation labels.

Test designs with representative translations rather than English text alone.

Check how text wrapping affects spacing and visual hierarchy.

Text expansion isn’t the same across all strings or languages, so avoid relying on a single percentage as a universal rule. Test the actual content whenever possible.

👉 Account for different scripts and text directions

Certain languages use different character sets, require specific fonts, or follow different text directionality conventions. Arabic and Hebrew, for example, are written right to left. If your source language is written from left to right, switching directions can affect the interface alignment and navigation.

Here’s what you need to do:

Choose fonts that support the scripts you intend to use.

Check line height, character spacing, and readability across languages.

Consider right-to-left layouts and bidirectional text.

Make sure directional icons and navigation patterns behave appropriately.

Avoid assuming that every language follows the same typographic conventions.

👉 Keep translatable text separate from visual assets and code

Text embedded directly into images or hardcoded into application components is not a good idea. If want to create a banner with text baked into the image, each language may require a separate asset. If the interface strings are scattered throughout the codebase, your translators and devs might have a hard time updating them consistently.

Bottom line: keep the text separate from visual assets and app logic. Use dedicated string resources for interface content, give strings stable identifiers, and develop a process for collecting and updating translatable text.

👉 Provide context for translators

A string doesn’t say much, you often don’t understand its meaning when it’s on its own. Context helps the translators produce accurate translations.

To prevent problems, you just have to provide:

Screenshots showing where each string appears.

Descriptions of the purpose of the string.

Character limits where UI constraints exist.

Notes about tone, terminology, or intended meaning.

Information about placeholders and variables.

👉 Consider regional formats and cultural conventions

Other elements that need to be adapted are dates, times, numbers, currencies, measurements, and other conventions that vary between markets. Design-stage localization accounts for these differences before the formatting becomes embedded in the interface.

So use locale-aware formatting instead of hardcoded regional conventions. Think about how the different formats can affect the available space, and make sure the interface can fit the content that users will see in each market.

There are other aspects, too. Things like colors, symbols, imagery, examples, and tone have different meanings across audiences as well. You’ll also have to review these in the context of your target markets . Don’t just assume that a design will be perceived the same way everywhere.

👉 Test designs with pseudolocalization and real translations

It’s hard to detect localization issues when you’re reviewing an interface only in its source language. You can test with pseudolocalization. It’s a method of testing that replaces or modifies source text to simulate characteristics of translated content. You’ll be able to see layout problems before the actual translations are added.

Once the translations are available, test the actual localized interface as well. Because real translations can expose other problems, ones that simulated strings cannot: grammatical context, pluralization, text direction, and terminology, for example. Also make sure to include localization checks in the design review process; don’t wait until the final release candidate.

👉 Establish a handoff between design and localization

Now all you need is a reliable way to move the content between designers and the people responsible for translation. You can do this with a handoff where you define:

Where translatable strings are stored.

Who reviews and approves source content.

How new and changed strings are identified.

How translators receive the necessary context.

How completed translations return to design and development.

How teams verify that the latest translations are being used.

How to implement design-stage localization in your workflow

Here are a few steps for the product teams to take:

Choose your target languages early

Ideally, you should know which languages you plan to support as early as possible. Identify the languages for the initial release and think whether or not others will follow. This way, you’ll make better decisions about the typography, text direction, layouts, and internationalization requirements.

Prepare your designs for localization

As you create wireframes and interface components, you should try to identify the areas that may be affected by the translated content. They are usually review buttons, navigation items, headings, forms, error messages, dialogs, and other text-heavy components.

See if the layouts adapt to different string lengths, whether text is embedded in images, and whether components support the scripts and directions required by your target languages. Create reusable design components and set guidelines for other designers.

Organize and extract your UI strings

Moving on to when your designs contain the text that needs translation. Make sure those strings can be managed independently of the visual layout. Give those strings meaningful identifiers and give translators the necessary context. This is also a good time to look for duplicated strings and decide when the same wording should be reused across multiple screens.

Connect your design tool to your localization workflow

You’ll benefit from integrating your design tool with the localization management platform you use. Thanks to this type of integration, you’ll be able to transfer strings and bring translations back into your designs. Designers will be able to review the localized content in context and the translators and developers will work better with organized source strings.

Translate, review, validate

In this step, you send the strings through your translation workflow. Make sure they have context where needed, including screenshots and descriptions. After translations, reviewers can then verify terminology, accuracy, and consistency. When translations are ready, you can bring them back into the design and check how they behave in the UI.

How POEditor helps with design-stage localization

As mentioned, design and translation should be connected. POEditor is a localization management platform that keeps your translation projects organized, and where your team can collaborate on multilingual content.

For teams using Figma, the POEditor integration can connect UI design work with the translation workflow. It can help your team in multiple ways:

Prepare strings for translation: Organize the text that appears in your interface so it can be managed as localization content.

Collaborate across roles: Give designers, translators, and developers a more structured way to work with multilingual content.

Review translations in context: Bring translated text into designs to identify layout issues and improve the localized experience.

Manage ongoing changes: Keep localization part of the product workflow as designs and source strings evolve.

If you’re using Figma to design a multilingual product, explore the POEditor Figma localization plugin to see how it can fit into your process.

Design-stage localization
