AI systems do a pretty good job with translations. Or so we think. There\u2019s a catch: good translation isn\u2019t always the right translation. Give AI a sentence without any background, and it has to make a lot of decisions on its own. Does it always make the right decision? Not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Context in AI translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Translation context is the information that helps an AI understand what your content means, who it’s for, and how it is being used. AI models are very good at recognizing patterns and producing fluent language, but they don’t know the meaning behind an isolated string.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Home,” for example, can mean multiple things. It can mean a place of residence, but if you’re a company building a software product, you probably want your AI interpret this word as what the user clicks to get to the main dashboard of the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you give the translation model the necessary info, it has a much better idea of what you’re talking about. It doesn’t have to guess the meaning of the word. It might choose the wrong meaning. Give it the info it needs to make the right decision from the first try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Context and prompts aren’t the same thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before we get started, let’s get this straight: context and prompts are not the same. A prompt is the instruction you give the AI about what you want it to do. Context, on the other hand, gives it the information it needs to understand the content and make appropriate translation decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prompt defines the task. Context helps define the conditions under which that task should be performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We feel like this needs to be addressed because you may notice that your AI model is perfectly capable of following an instruction correctly and still produce a translation that doesn’t fit your product, audience, or localization requirements. Context fills in any missing information not in the prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to provide context for AI translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It depends on what you’re translating and how much ambiguity there is. Still, there are several types of context that are useful in almost any AI translation workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Product & domain<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to write a novel about your company; a couple of paragraphs are enough to establish the domain and prevent some very basic misunderstandings. You could describe your product\/service, what it does, and what your audience is. Nonetheless, you can make this context more specific when your product uses terminology that has a particular meaning in your industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell the AI who you’re translating for<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Let’s go back to the audience. It’s really important to describe it, because your target audience influences word choice, tone, and even how much terminology you can reasonably use. You can also describe the relationship between your brand and your users. Or if your company is formal and corporate, friendly and conversational, playful, authoritative, or somewhere in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain where the text shows<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When you’re working with human translators, it’s easier because they can look at a complete application and likely understand a string from its surroundings. An AI model working from a translation file may not see the whole picture. It won’t necessarily know if a text belongs to a button, a menu item, a page title, or an instruction. So describe the location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain what the string does<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

However, it’s sometimes not enough to know where a string appears. If the string represents an action, you’ll have to explain the action. This is recommended for short strings, because short strings tend to contain less information about their own meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specify the target language and locale<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Some languages have significant regional variation, so it’s important the AI knows which locale you’re targeting. You can also include regional preferences when they matter to your product so that the AI doesn’t treat a language as a single variety when your users expect something more specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Define your tone and voice<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, we see that a translation is technically correct, but it still sounds wrong for our products. Brand voice is the consistent personality behind your communication. Tone can change depending on the situation, audience, and type of content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you give context for AI translation, describe the characteristics you want the translated content to have and the characteristics you want to avoid: formality, friendliness, directness, technicality, emotional tone, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give it your terminology and glossary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

One of the most useful forms of translation context, the glossary tells the AI which words have specific meanings within your product. If you don’t give this information, the model may choose alternatives that create inconsistency across your product. Your glossary is part of your product’s linguistic specification. The AI shouldn’t have to reinvent the terminology every time it runs into a familiar concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Include formatting and technical constraints<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Besides words, your source strings likely contain placeholders, variables, HTML tags, Markdown, line breaks, escape characters, or other elements that should stay the same. So make sure to tell the AI what it can and cannot change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be character limits, which is an issue especially in mobile interfaces, buttons, navigation elements, and other space-constrained parts of a product. Give the AI that information so it can choose translations that actually fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Screenshots can provide context too<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Where words are not enough, a picture comes to the rescue. Anything that helps you communicate the intended meaning of the source content can become useful translation context. You don’t need screenshots for every single string, of course; just when the text alone doesn’t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t make these mistakes when providing context <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s easy to make this one: being too vague. When you say things like \u201ctranslate naturally,\u201d it can sound helpful to you, but it doesn’t tell the model what natural means for your users. The same is true of instructions such as \u201cmake it professional\u201d or \u201cuse the correct terminology\u201d when you haven’t actually explained what those things mean in your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another common problem is to give context that contradicts itself. You can’t feed it a style guide that says your product should be friendly and conversational but another instruction says to use formal language. The model still has to decide which instruction to follow. Be clear and consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s also easy to overlook the technical side of localization. We’re talking about placeholders, variables, tags, and character limits. Sure, they may not affect the linguistic meaning of a string, but what they can have a major impact on is whether the translated content actually works in your product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alas, don’t assume that context is something you only need at the beginning of a project. Your product will likely change, the terminology will evolve, and you’ll probably add new concepts along with new features. The translation context should evolve with your product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
