In reality, one is a broad technical field with decades of history, while the other is a technological evolution built on&#8230; No, we&#8217;re not revealing this already. Read on to see why the shouldn&#8217;t be a debate on machine translation vs. AI translation. Not today, at least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About machine translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Machine translation (MT) is the process of translating text from one language to another using software, with no human involvement. It&#8217;s been around for dozens of years, since the early days of computing. Researchers in the 1950s believed that language could be broken into mathematical rules and converted systematically between languages. At the time, many scientists viewed translation as essentially a giant code-breaking exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in the day, the assumption was that if a computer knows enough vocabulary and grammar rules, it should be able to translate languages automatically. Things aren&#8217;t that simply; human language is filled with ambiguity, idioms, slang, tone, emotional subtext, contextual meaning, and more. We can&#8217;t reduce these to fixed rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The beginnings: rule-based machine translation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The earliest systems used what became known as rule-based machine translation (RBMT). These systems depended heavily on bilingual dictionaries, grammar databases, syntax rules, and linguistic mapping. Developers manually programmed grammatical relationships between languages. Consequently, this process was enormously labor-intensive because every language pair required thousands of handcrafted linguistic rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t sound too great, but there&#8217;s actually a great advantage to them. Rule-based systems are predictable. Since these rules were defined by humans manually, it was simple for companies to maintain strict control over the terminology and the sentence behavior. The downside was that it became very difficult to maintain and expand RBMT as language evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A move forward: statistical machine translation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the late 1980s, researchers shifted toward statistical machine translation (SMT). These systems learned translation patterns from enormous bilingual datasets. Researchers fed millions of translated sentence pairs into algorithms, and the system analyzed how words and phrases commonly aligned between languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advantage here is that statistical systems adapted more easily than rule-based systems. They could improve simply by ingesting more data. During this period, Google Translate became one of the most recognizable machine translation products in the world. Its early versions actually relied heavily on phrase-based statistical translation models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The new era of MT: neural machine translation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The modern era began around 2014 with the emergence of neural networks and deep learning. <a href=\"\/blog\/what-is-neural-machine-translation-nmt\/\">Neural machine translation<\/a> (NMT) operated on the classic Encoder-Decoder architecture. The Encoder read the entire source sentence and compresses the &#8220;meaning&#8221; into a complex mathematical vector. The Decoder took that &#8220;meaning vector&#8221; and unfolds it into the target language, predicting one word at a time based on what came before. Since 2017, this technology has evolved even further into the Transformer architecture, which is the same tech that powers many <a href=\"\/blog\/nmt-vs-llm\/\">large language models<\/a> (LLMs) today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with the rise of LLMs, a new term emerged&#8230; <a href=\"\/kb\/ai-translation\">AI translation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About AI Translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI translation is the use of artificial intelligence systems to automatically understand and translate meaning between human languages. Now here&#8217;s the interesting part: AI translation systems are built on neural networks. Indeed, MT today is AI translation. Or should we say AI translation is MT? That&#8217;s why there shouldn&#8217;t be a machine translation vs. ai translation debate, since contemporary systems use the same technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest breakthroughs in AI translation came with the invention of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geeksforgeeks.org\/deep-learning\/architecture-and-working-of-transformers-in-deep-learning\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Transformer<\/a> (deep learning architecture) architecture, which is actually used for NMT. The Transformer uses &#8220;attention,&#8221; a mechanism that allows the AI to determine which words in a sentence are most important when translating another word. Modern systems from Google, DeepL, Microsoft, and OpenAI rely on Transformer-based architectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest evolution in AI translation involves LLMs, which aren&#8217;t used exclusively for translation. <a href=\"\/blog\/large-language-models-localization\/\">Large language models<\/a> are different because they are trained on massive multilingual datasets containing books, websites, technical documentation, articles, and many other types of content. As a result, LLMs learn broader language behavior beyond translation alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LLMs are, thus, capable of preserving style, adapting tone, rewriting contextually, summarizing during translation, and more. In many cases, current AI translation is becoming less like \u201ctranslation software\u201d and more like multilingual language reasoning. However, even though AI translation has improved dramatically, it still differs from <a href=\"\/blog\/machine-translation-vs-human-translation\/\">human translation<\/a>. We are not yet at a point where we can safely say that all AI translations sound human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why AI translation feels different<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason why some people still think there&#8217;s a difference between machine translation and AI translation to this day is probably because AI translation feels much <a href=\"\/blog\/how-does-ai-improve-machine-translation-accuracy\/\">more advanced than older machine translation<\/a> is because the systems are no longer merely converting vocabulary. In practical terms, AI translation is becoming closer to multilingual language generation than classical translation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conclusion we can draw from all of this is that the distinction between machine translation and AI translation is one of evolution rather than opposition.
