There are so many ways in which a translation can turn bad. We agree, translation mistakes can be funny, but sometimes they really damage a brand. In today’s article, we are discussing the common errors to avoid in the translation process.

Why translation mistakes happen

We’ve all noticed that many mistakes seem to be caused by literal translation, where the focus is on individual words instead of the overall meaning. If you don’t take a step back to consider intent, it’s easy to produce something that looks accurate but feels unnatural. It gets even trickier when context is missing. Words or phrases can have multiple meanings, and without knowing how it’s being used, even a good translator can choose the wrong one.

Some words, idioms, and expressions don’t translate cleanly because they are tied to the culture. When they get translated with no careful consideration, they can sound strange or completely lose their meaning. Now add in cultural differences, and the gap widens further. When you combine all of these factors, it’s easy to see how mistakes happen.

Mistakes in translation are no longer funny when you’re dealing with legal documents, or in medical or technical fields, the stakes are even higher. Nevertheless, even in marketing, a message that has been translated poorly can damage your brand reputation or campaign.

The 8 translation mistakes that brands make

Some mistakes stand out more than others, so here are the main things to avoid.

Translating word-for-word

It’s understandable—sometimes you’re under time pressure and a literal translation is the easiest solution. The problem is that languages don’t mirror each other; they structure ideas differently, prioritize different elements in a sentence, and even express logic in unique ways.

When it comes to localization, you should always shift your mindset from “translation” to “adaptation.” Focus on what the sentence is trying to achieve and recreate that effect in the target language, even if the wording changes completely.

Ignoring the cultural context

Language reflects the values and norms of a region. That’s why you’ll notice that something that feels friendly and engaging in one culture might have the opposite effect in another. Of all things, humor is probably the riskiest.

However, even elements you might not have given a second thought (like colors, symbols, and references) can have very different meanings depending on the region. You could send the wrong message with something as simple as an image. So go beyond language and include cultural adaptation in your localization.

Misusing idioms

Idioms are also deeply rooted in culture, and you’ll often struggle to find direct equivalents. If you’re thinking of translating an idiom literally, you might want to reconsider. It likely won’t work and you’ll end up with something awkward. It’s best to use idioms sparingly in global content. When they’re essential, work with experienced translators who can either find a natural equivalent or rephrase the idea in such a way that the meaning is kept.

Over-relying on machine translation

Machine translation has its place, but don’t abuse it. Even today, it still struggles with nuance, so the quality might not meet your standards. You could use machine-translated content for internal use, but for customer-facing content, it may require a lot of post-editing. View machine translation as a tool, not like a solution for everything. If you use it, combine it with human post-editing and review for the best results.

Lack of context for translators

Context is everything in translation. We’re not exaggerating. Translators need to know everything about the text, like where it will be used. Is it a button, a headline, a legal clause? Let them know. Lack of context is how some brands end up with UI labels that don’t fit and inconsistent product descriptions even though they used human translators.

Inconsistent terminology

Among those translation mistakes that stand out is inconsistency. Some translations have different terms for the same concept. This often happens when you have multiple translators working on the same project without shared resources, or when updates are made over time without maintaining consistency. It’s so important to put the time in creating a centralized glossary and terminology database.

Forgetting about tone and voice

Brand voice is a brand’s personality, how it presents itself. Companies sometimes fail to provide their translators with proper guidance, and they’re left with translations that don’t match their identity. That brand feels different depending on the language. But a brand’s identity should always be consistent across markets.

Not adapting for local formats

Even the smallest details matter when it comes to localization. Dates, currencies, measurement units, address formats, and punctuation are all elements that require localization too. They vary by region, and if you leave them as they are, some users will find them confusing. Don’t make the mistake of localizing just the text.

How to avoid translation mistakes

First off, it’s important you get yourself in this mindset of not treating translation as just converting words in another language. When you’re publishing a text, you’re communicating meaning. Begin with your source content, which needs to be as clear as possible and free from ambiguity. If the original text is confusing, translators will have a hard time translating it correctly.

Speaking of translators, it’s essential you work with professional translators and give them the context they need. They need to know the purpose of the content, where the text will appear, the target audience, and they also need access to your style guides and glossaries.

Always review every text you receive. Check the translations in context and involve a second linguist whenever possible. Human judgement can’t be replaced, so you need the right people along with the right technology. If you create a solid review process, it’s totally possible to avoid most translation mistakes before they ever reach your audience.

Ready to power up localization?
Subscribe to the POEditor platform today!
See pricing

You work in localization so you probably already know this (but allow us to highlight it either way): translation is rooted in meaning, tone, and culture.
